  • Introduction: The measurement of the tongue volume and the oral cavity volume
so far has been carried out using various methods, namely, conventional methods,
two-dimensional imaging, and three-dimensional imaging. Cone Beam Computed
Tomography (CBCT) is the best alternative for evaluating the morphological
structures of the oral cavity, especially the volume of the tongue and oral cavity.
This study aimed to examine the extent to which CBCT has been performed in
evaluating the volume of the tongue and oral cavity compared to CT. Methods: The
search for articles referred to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review
and Meta-analyses (PRISMA) conducted through PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect,
and SAGE Journals published in 2011-2021. Articles were screened and assessed
for eligibility. Article screening was done by checking for duplication, reading the
title and abstract, and reading the entire text. Results: The initial search retrieved
25,780 articles. After the eligibility criteria were applied, 16 articles were selected
for qualitative analysis. A number of uses of CBCT were identified. Several studies
assessed the volumetric correlation between tongue volume and oral cavity volume
as well as other parameters. Post-treatment volumetric evaluations of the oral
cavity and reliability assessment of CBCT were also reported. The use of CT was
shown to be similar as CBCT. Conclusion: The use of CBCT in the evaluation of
tongue volume and oral cavity volume has been carried out to assess the correlation
between the two, evaluating the correlation with the upper airway, volumetric
evaluation after surgical and non-surgical procedure, and assessing the
relationship between tongue volume and tooth position, occlusion, and BMI.
    v
Evaluation on OSA and malocclusion subjects, as well as assessing the reliability
of CBCT in the volumetric evaluation of the oral cavity has been done. The use of
CT was carried out for similar purposes as CBCT without the assessment of its
    reliability.
