ABSTRACT
Introduction: Scaling root planing (SRP) is a conventional treatment that
has limitations in deep pocket areas. The use of chlorhexidine subgingival
irrigation in SRP is an adjunctive therapy in the treatment of chronic periodontitis.
This article review aims to determine the effect of chlorhexidine subgingival
irrigation on the clinical parameters of periodontal tissue after scaling root planing
in chronic periodontitis patients. Methods: This research method is a rapid review
following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
(PRISMA) guidelines using PubMed, Livivo, EBSCOhost, and Google Scholar
databases and searches manually, with clinical parameters used including Plaque
Index (PI), Gingival Index (GI), Bleeding on Probing (BOP), Pocket Depth (PD),
Clinical Attachment Level (CAL). The articles were selected according to the
inclusion criteria, then the articles were assessed using a risk of bias (ROB)
assessment with the EbscoHOST Risk of Bias Tool. Results: A total of ten articles
were used according to the inclusion criteria. All articles showed a decrease in
clinical parameters in both the SRP + chlorhexidine irrigation group and the SRP
only group. But from the statistics, only four articles stated that there were
significant differences between the groups. Conclusion: Based on the results
obtained from the review of the current article, it can be concluded that
chlorhexidine subgingival irrigation after scaling and root planing has the
potential to improve clinical parameters of periodontal tissues in chronic
periodontitis patients.
