  • Some craniofacial shapes can have a greater tendency of acquiring malocclusions and dental crowding due to a loss of space in the maxilla. The research is done in order to know the correlation between cephalic index and maxillary spaces of the primary dentition on children aged 4-5.
A cross sectional study was conducted on 60 purposively sampled children from RA/BA/TA Amanah, PAUD Linuhung, and RA/BA/TA Asy-Syafiiyyah aged 4-5 during December 2017. Cephalic Index was obtained with spreading calliper, while maxillary spaces were observed. Data was analysed using Spearmans correlation test.
Average cephalic index results of RA/BA/TA Amanah, PAUD Linuhung, and RA/BA/TA Asy-Syafiiyyah were 78.4%, 78.7%, and 78.9% respectively. Maxillary space results were 65.0% generalized spacing, 15.0% only primate space, 20.0% no space, 80% spaced dentition, and 20% closed dentition. Correlation between cephalic index and maxillary spaces was rS=-0.604 and p-value 0.000.
The average cephalic index for all three kindergarten was mesocephalic. Spaced dentition was most dominant, and so is generalized spacing. Correlation between cephalic index and maxillary spaces of the primary dentition occurs when the value of cephalic index decreases, the maxillary space of the primary dentition also decreases resulting in an increase in closed dentition or vice versa.
