Ilus ; 29 cm ABSTRACT IV This thesis entitled "The American, Arabian, and British Mass Media Propaganda regarding the Hamas-Israel Conflict: A Critical Discourse Analysis" is conducted to explore the ways of Hamas and Israel represented as well as the ways of propaganda used to construct the representation of Hamas and Israel by the American, Arabian, and British mass media. Using qualitative study and descriptive method, the researcher obtains the data from the news releases of CNN, Al Jazeera, and BBC regarding the Hamas-Israel conflict between 8 June 2014 and 5 August 2014 totaling 12 news releases. This research performs the exploration of Hamas and Israel using Fairclough's approaches of textual analysis dimension and social practice analysis dimension. The textual analysis dimension is analyzed using Halliday's transitivity and van Leeuwen's social actor representation while the social practice analysis dimension is analyzed using Shabo's techniques of propaganda. The findings show that CNN represents Hamas relatively negative and Israel relatively positive; Al Jazeera represents Hamas relatively positive and Israel relatively negative; and BBC represents Hamas and Israel relatively even by representing them relatively negative. Moreover, the findings also show that various techniques of propaganda are used by CNN, Al Jazeera, and BBC to construct the representation of Hamas and Israel based on their particular ideologies and importance.
