  • Position of maxillary first molar has its importance in assessing occlusion as the key to occlusion due to its anatomical placement to be more reliable and less restrained in taking their positions. The purpose of this study is to determine whether there will be any differences in position and distance of first molar before and after fixed orthodontic treatment in all Angle Class II cases that involved first premolar extracted during treatment.

Purposive sampling technique was used in this research. Total of 40 patients in Orthodontic Department UNPAD were selected and their dental model casts before and after treatment were compared. The distance between medial 2nd palatal rugae and left and right central fossa of the first molar was projected to mid-palatal raphe line and was measured by using digital calliper with accuracy of 0.1mm. The data was analysed by using normality test with Shapiro Wilk method and dependent pair t-test.

Statistically significant differences in distance were found between pre and post treatment. Left is (1.93±2.14) mm and right is (1.66±2.14) mm with p-value > 0.05. 87.5% of left maxillary first molar had mesial drifting and 12.5% had distal drifting. For right maxillary first molar, 80% of them having mesial drifting and 20% having distal drifting.

This study concludes that there were significant position and distance changed in left and right maxillary first molar if compared before and after fixed orthodontic treatment.
