Identification plays a major role in any crime investigation. The patterns of wrinkles on the lips has individual characteristic and remains unchanged from sixth week of intrauterine life. Along with various other established methods, cheiloscopy also plays a key role for identification purpose during mass disasters and crime investigations. Cheiloscopy, the study of lip prints, is an upcoming tool for identification of person as the lip print of every person is unique.
This study evaluated the effectiveness of cheiloscopy in heritability of lip print patterns among parents and children and also to evaluate the quadrant-wise dominant lip print patterns among the Indian population. The study population comprised of 30 Indian families (30 fathers, 30 mothers and 30 children). Lip prints were obtained using digital photograpy method and analyzed using Adobe Photoshop Software based on Suzuki and Tsuchihashi classification.
The dominant lip pattern in quadrants 2 and 3 was Type II and for quadrants 6 and 7 was Type I. This study also showed that lip prints can be inherited from parents to their children. The resemblance of lip print patterns among mothers and children are 54% whereas among fathers and children are 46%.
According to the present study, Type II lip print pattern is the most dominant pattern among the Indian population. Besides that, the lip print resemblance between mothers and children is higher compared to the resemblance between fathers and children. -
