• Description: This book is intended specifically for dental students studying microbiology. It starts with a general introduction to microorganisms and the host response to those organisms. In the second section, the focus is on specific host sites of infection while the final section specifically covers infections encountered in dentistry. This is an update of a book originally published in 1999. There have been numerous changes in the field of infectious disease, which make this second edition necessary. Purpose: This was designed to be a core textbook that can be used in the curriculum of dental schools as well as a reference for practicing dentists. Unlike other textbooks in medical microbiology, this book focuses specifically on the issues and science that dentists need to fully understand the discipline. Audience: This book is written primarily for dental students. It is likely a text that the student will take into practice as a reference. However, most of the information is not in-depth enough for clinicians specializing in more serious dental infections. Features: A glossary begins the book, which is surprising, although there is some logic in placing it here because the student will start with the new terminology used in this field. This is followed by a section covering the general concepts of bacterial and viral properties associated with infections, host responses to that invasion, and the resistance to antimicrobial agents that can develop during treatment. It then carries through with specific infections found at different bodysites with many examples and pictures to illustrate them. The final section is specific for dental students in that it shows in a very logical way how bacteria attach to teeth, the by-products that cause damage, and how the host response can cause inflammation and damage to tissues around the teeth. The topics in this section progress to more serious infectious disease of the mouth and teeth. The book, overall, is very well organized. The color pictures are very complementary to the text and illustrate the lessons well. Assessment: I appreciate the concise nature of this book. Each chapter is followed by a section that has key facts, which is useful when studying for examinations. This book is unique in its focus on infections encountered by the dentist. Overall it is a valuable addition to books in this field.
