  • Maxillary sinus initially referred to as antrum of highmore which also known as the largest and first paranasal sinus develop. Sexual dimorphism is one of its integral aspects as it is one of the initial steps in personal identification of an unknown cadaver and most bones that are conventionally used for sex determination are often recovered in fragmented especially in catastrophes like explosions and other mass disasters. Zygomatic bones and maxillary sinus remains intact although the skull and other bones may be badly disfigured in victims who are cremated. The purpose of this research is to find out is there any difference in height and width of maxillary sinus wall between male and female on panoramic radiograph.
Research method is descriptive analytic that compares and contrasts with respect to variables in a situation to the sample of population which meet the demand of inclusion criteria. This research examine 50 panoramic radiograph which divided to 2 groups of sex and age of samples fixed at 20-40 years old.
The results shows that average height and width of right and left maxillary sinus wall in male are higher than female. Average height of left and right wall of male are (31.46±3.09 and 30.47±3.18 mm) respectively showing statistically significant higher than female with 26.41±4.41 mm for right side and 26.06±4.49 mm for left side. The mean sinus width for male was 26.57± 3.23 and 26.3± 2.87 mm for right and left side respectively which only shows left width of maxillary sinus wall in male is significantly greater than that of female with 24.82± 3.17 mm for right side and 24.64± 2.85 mm for left side.
In conclusion, significant differences was shown in right and left maxillary sinus heights and left maxillary sinus wall width between males and female whereas right maxillary sinus wall widths between male and female shows relatively or no significant differences measured using panoramic radiographs.
