  • Oral bacteria are widely recognized in the etiology of periodontal disease. In menopausal stage, the gingiva tends to get inflamed and leads into gingivitis and progress to periodontitis if left untreated. Besides bacteria that cause periodontal disease, sex hormones also play an etiologic factor in periodontal disease.
This research attempts to find out the overview of total number of facultative anaerobic bacteria in subgingival plaque of menopausal woman. A descriptive study of subgingival plaque microbe in 15 menopausal women and 8 non-menopausal women (controlled group) from Periodontology department of Rumah Sakit Gigi dan Mulut, Bandung was conducted. Subgingival plaque samples were taken using curette, and diluted 5 times using 10-fold dilution. The samples then inoculated to the Blood Agar Plate and incubated at 37°C for 24 hours under facultative anaerobic condition. The number of colonies was counted using bacteria colony counter.
This study found that menopausal women manifested higher amount of facultative anaerobic bacteria in subgingival plaque compared to non-menopausal women which are 213-4640 x 105 colonies and 50-340 x 105 colonies per 1 g of subgingival plaque with a mean number of 1710.333 x 105 (p=0.391) and 186.3785 x 105 (p=0.529) respectively.
Therefore, it can be concluded from the data that menopause women has higher amount of facultative anaerobic bacteria in subgingival plaque. Awareness should be brought to menopausal women on the importance of oral hygiene.
