  • Mouthwashes have been one of the most utilized additional tools when it comes to mouth cleaning, including alcoholic mouthwash. Despite of its favorable effect, the utilization of alcoholic mouthwash still needs to be thoroughly studied. The current literature study aimed on evaluating the risk of acquiring oral cancer due to the usage of alcoholic mouthwash.
Ten research articles published in various journals were evaluated in this particular literature study. The collection process was conducted by using Medline search in PubMed that included five population-based, two hospital-based, two multi-hospitals based, and one multi-center based case controls. An evaluation of the methodology used as well as the results was then performed.
The result of the current study revealed that there was no statistically significant (pmean value = 0.45) effect of increased risk of acquiring oral cancer due to the frequent utilization of alcoholic mouthwash (for five research). Three research revealed that the utilization of alcoholic mouthwash more than once a day show statically significant (95% CImean = 1.04-3.67) increased risk of acquiring oral cancer. Whilst three research concluded that the duration of utilization of alcoholic mouthwash more than twenty years show statistically significant (95% CImean = 1.13-3.48) of increased risk of acquiring oral cancer.
This study concluded there is evidence to show association between the utilization of an alcohol containing mouthwash and oral cancer. Despite of the evident associations, the statistical analyses of the studied research in this literature study were not all turned out to be significant. Further studies in this area are needed.
