<note>This thesis is entitled "Theme in Indonesian Folktales in English
Version: A Systemic Functional Grammar Study". The objectives of this study
are analyzing the themes, their elements, thematic progressions and their
contributions to the textual cohesion of Indonesian Folktales in English Version.
The collected data, in this research were taken from the book entitled "Indonesian
Folktales" published in 1981 by Pustaka Media Publisher. Two data, Princess
Sumur Bandung and Malim Dewa which consist of 104 paragraphs and 640
clauses were chosen to be analyzed based on the theory of Systemic Functional
Grammar (SFG) which pioneered by Halliday. TIle method and technique used in
this study are descriptive qualitative method. The results of this research reveals
that (1) there are two kinds of theme-rhcme patterns are found; they are simple
theme-rheme patterns and multiple theme-rheme patterns. In details, the simple
theme-rheme patterns contain constant theme-theme pattern, linear theme-theme
rheme pattern, and derived theme-rheme pattern, while multiple ones contain
combination of constant and linear theme, combination of linear and derived
theme, and combination of constant, linear and derived theme-rheme pattern.
Besides, the combination of constant and linear theme-rheme pattern are the most
frequently distributed. While the elements of themes which found are textual,
interpersonal and ideational elements. Further, the results of the research also
reveal that (2) the contributions of chosen themes, the elements and thematic
progression pattern to the textual cohesion of Indonesian Folktales in English
Version which cover unmarked theme, marked theme, textual themes and thematic
progressions patterns are linked each other in contributing to the cohesiveness of
Indonesian Folktales in English Version. In addition, the most important things in
constructing the cohesiveness of Indonesian Folktales in English Version are the
elements of themes itself. Pronouns are the most frequently used to link the
cohesiveness of Indonesian Folktales which appeared 288 times. The pronouns
orient the reader to what the text is about and focus on generalized participants
which the participants are realized by ideational theme. In other word, ideational
themes are used to show the clarity of the subject matter being told. The second
ones are structural conjuncticn which appeared 137 times which contribute to build
and to link the previous elements to the following one to make the information
between ail clauses will be more cohesive.
