Because this is primarily a pedagogical history, there are aspects of the evolution of English which I have slighted, particularly the very powerful insights into phonological change provided by generative phonology. But to develop the background for that would have gone far beyond what is possible or needed in a survey of this kind. I have also adapted a rather conservative version of a transformational grammar to deal with syntactic change. A case grammar of the sort proposed by Charles Fillmore or the model of generative semantics offered by James McCawley or George Lakoff is more interesting than the model used here. -
