This volume contains a selection from the papers given at the European Colloquium on Malay and Indonesian Studies which was held in Leiden in 1983. The papers centre around two themes. The first is the role of contact in the development of Malay and Indonesian culture. As examples of "contact-studies" the Pasisir culture of Java and elsewhere and "the second stream of Indian cultural influence" with its Islamic (Arabic and Persian) elements and its spread to the outer islands may be mentioned. The second theme concerns the methodology for the analysis and interpretation of texts, written and oral, against the background of Indonesian and Malay culture. The twenty papers presented here all fall within the chosen framework, and together they cover a period that extends from ancient times up to the present day, dealing with subjects such as early Muslim graves in Java, the urban culture of Surabaya in 1928, modern Balinese theatre, or the short stories of Pramoedya Ananta Toer. -
