As with previous edition, the aim is to present the fundamental principles of soil mechanics with clear and careful explanations. The book assembles all the essential elements of an undergraduate course, leading from introductory empirical and theoretical explanation of the properties of soils through to practical applications,, such as earth-retaining structures and foundations. Semi empirical design procedures and geotechnical processes are covered.
    For this edition extra material has been added on soil compaction relating to the latest specification for highway works, and the section on laretai earth pressure has been revised in view of the impending Code of Practice for earthretaining structures. The section on shear strength has been revised and expanded.
