"In 1962 I applied for a UNESCO Fellowship in the field of geophysical data analysis, suggesting the analysis of geomagnetic solar diurnal variation as a project and the RAND Corporation, Santa Monica, California, as a location at which to carry out the project. Later that year I was granted the Fellowship and RAND offered to provide facilities including the use of their IBM 7090 computer.
I was at RAND during the tenure of the Fellowship, which was from March to August 1963. During that time I was able to prepare most of the primary data (mean hourly values from observatories), develop the program for computation of Fourier coefficients, and make a preliminary analysis in latitude and longitude of the Fourier coefficients; but this analysis gave results of doubtful significance.
After returning to the Bureau of Mineral Resources I continued tge project and, after some experimentation, developed the method describe in this Bulletin. About 30 percent more data were added, thereby improving tge distribution of observatories for most months." -
