  • Abstract :
Caring and controlled behavior are emotional regulation and aggressive
impulse control skills that have an important role in children aged 5-8 years as a
foundation in social interaction before children begin to develop more complex
social skills (Bierman, Greenberg, Coie, Dodge , Lochman, & McMahon, 2017).
These skills can be trained in children, one of which is the Fast Track Friendship
Group program that has been created by Prof. Karen L. Bierman and her
colleagues for 20 years and it has been proven to be effective in improving
children’s social emotional abilities in various ethnic countries. However, this
program has not been researched and adapted to the culture and language in
    Indonesia.
This study aims to obtain the cultural surface structure of the Fast Track
Friendship Group program module which is appropriate to the culture and
development of children aged 5-8 years in Indonesia. This cultural adaptation
process used the adaptation framework proposed by Barrera & Castro (2006). This
research consists of 4 stages, that are information gathering, preliminary
adaptation design, preliminary adaptation test, and adaptation refinement. This
research involved 2 kindergarten teachers, 4 language expert reviewers, 1
sociologist expert reviewer, and 2 psychologist expert reviewers. While the
cognitive interviews were conducted with 5 children aged 5-8 years in Indonesia
and their parents. Based on the cultural adaptation process that has been carried
out by the researcher on the Friendship Group Program Unit 2: Caring and
Controlled Behavior, the results obtained are in the form of a final draft in
Indonesian that can be understood and can be used by children aged 5-8 years in
Indonesia. The changes were made regarding the use in language and text, changes
in images, in activities, and changes in format that follows the stages of cognitive
and language development of children and the daily culture of children aged 5-8
years in Indonesia. Changes in language, text, and format are made more concise
and concrete, while changes to images are made by giving colors and clarifying
facial expressions in character images, such as the shape of the eyes, mouth, and
eyebrows. Changes in activities are adjusted to activities that are recognized and
in accordance with the developmental stage of children aged 5-8 years in Indonesia
while maintaining the competitive nature and principles of playing by singing,
without changing the meaning and purpose of the game.
