  • ABSTRACT
    The purpose of this research was to identify and analyze: (1)The communication in the pilgrimage to Mecca; (2) The self concept of pilgrims before pilgrimage, (3) The self concept pilgrims during pilgrimage, and (4) The self-concept of pilgrims after the pilgrimage.
    This research used qualitative method or subjective perspective with symbolic interactionism paradigm. The technique of data collection used in this study were interview, observation and documentation_
    The results of this research showed that: (1) The communication in the hajj devided in two contexts, ritual and pilgrimage. The communication between husband and wife during pilgrimage increasing harmony among them, they more take care to each other and love each other than before. While interactions between group members can establish "group brotherhood", that characterized by intimacy, and form a "new family". The communication among fellow pilgrims cauld formed bonds of brotherhood pilgrimage that indicated by helping each other, loving each other, empathy, tolerance and humility (2) The self concept of prospective pilgrims were divided into four categories: some pilgrims were not good at reciting Qur'an, some pilgrim sometimes worship to Allah, some pilgrims realize their minus (disadvantages) and some pilgrims did not care of their surrounding (3)The transformation of self concept among hajj pilgrims in the form of an increase in the obligatory prayer, sunnah prayers, reciting Qur'an, praying and zikir. Pilgrims with these characteristics categorized as pilgrimage that renew spiritual values themselves. While transformation of self concept in the form of increasing social piety during the hajj pilgrimage was in a category of pilgrim that establishes self quality. Transformation of self concept happened through the contemplation, reflection, introspection, reorientation and self-evaluation. Transformation of self concept in the ritual aspect was characterized by changes in to the tawhid, taqarub, tazkiyah, repentance, resignation and piety. While the transformation of selfconcept in the social aspect is characterized by changes in simplicity, patience, caring, tolerance, humility, equality, brotherhood, courage, and dynamism. (4)Self concept after hajj pilgrims is transformed in the ritual aspects of self image with the "new status" as a mabrur pilgrim such as more frequent congregational prayers in the mosque, more frequent reciting the Quran, and understand reading "dhua" prayers. Pilgrims with these characteristics belong to the pilgrims that mode worship to God. While the self-image transformation "new status" in social aspect as pilgrims dressed mabrur increased social piety, such as concern to others, readiness to help others, patience recasting problems, hospitality, and generosity. Pilgrims with these characteristics belong to the pilgrims who are more care.
