ISLAMIC PREACHING COMMUNICATION IN PADANG&#13;
(A Phenomenological Study of Islamic Preachers' Communication Behavior&#13;
in Padang)&#13;
This research aimed to analyze preachers' motives, their communication experiences as source of action, their communication behaviors along with series of impression management techniques applied by during their preaching. A qualitative research based on constructivism paradigm and phenomenological tradition was carried out. By applying a purposive sampling technique, 15 preachers were chosen. The researcher then applied depth interviews and participant observations as data gathering techniques.&#13;
The research finally shows that several motives underlying the preachers': (a) alack of preachers, (b) motivated by seniors; and (c) exercising religion guidance. It had also been detected that preachers' motive in delivering Islamic teachings has multiplied to economy and popularity motives. Preachers' interactions with environment resulted in meaningful experience both in negative and positive sense. Preachers ' communication experiences with followers resulted on acceptability, recognition, promotion, and learning experience. Meanwhile, preachers' experiences with the committee generated reward and disappointment. On the other hand, experiences with peer could be categorized as friendship, concern, exemplary, and shameful. Those communication experiences became the foundation of preachers' activities in continuing their efforts.&#13;
Preachers' communication behaviors during their activities have several meanings, i.e. expanding insights, eliminating doubt, empowerment, support, building friendship, empathy, enabling consciousness, expressing concerns and entertainment. However, less sympathetic behaviors were found, i.e. haste, anger, and directing opinion. During the preaching process, preachers are exercising management impression in order to cultivate certain images to their followers by applying several techniques according their own capabilities both verbally and non-verbally&#13;
