  • ABSTRACT
This dissertation is entitled Nonassertive Pronoun Any (-) in English Sentences: AStudy of Structure and Semantic. There are three main points covered in this research, namely (1) The structures of nonassertive pronoun any (-) found in clauses and English sentences, (2) the specific meaning of nonassertive pronoun any () in each type of clause and sentence, (3) the elements that influence the meaning of nonassertive pronoun any () in different clauses and sentences.
The data were abtained from five different English novels as well as various English newspapers.. The theories employed in this research are quite varied in nature. In carrying out this research, the descriptive method was used with a variety of techniques: substitution, expansion, infixation and paraphrasing.
The findings of this research were as follows: (1) three types of construction of nonassertive pronoun any () were found in English sentences, namely any 6, any compound, and any contained in a phrase; (2) the trhree types of the construction of nonassertive pronoun any (-) may carry any of four main semantic meanings, such as (i) a universal free-choice and non free-choice meaning; (ii) an existential negative polarity meaning, polar questions, and conditionals; (iii) a unity meaning, namely the nonassertive pronoun any (-) that has two meanings, as in a combination of universal and nonspecific meanings or a combination of nonspecific and existential meanings; and (iv) a nonspecific meaning.
Based on the conceptual structures of clauses and sentences, it can be seen
that (a) nonassertive pronoun any 6 can stand alone without being followed by a noun, as it constitutes a free morphemes; (b) nonassertive pronoun any compound is always attached to certain elements. Such as —one, -body, and —thing; and (c) any contained in a phrases subdivided into two pats (i) any followed by of-pronoun + noun/noun phrase, which varies in structures, as in any of + noun (personal pronoUn), any of + noun (demonstrative pronoun), any of + noun phrase (posessive pronoun). In addition to these variable structures, it can refer to personal and nonpersonal, countable and uncountable nouns; (ii) any + noun has a fixed structure, it can only be followed by a noun. What's more, it can refer to personal, countable and uncountable nouns. The third type of any can be also found in prepositional phrases like at any point and in any caese(s). (3) Elements that can influence the meaning of nonassertive pronoun any () include verbs, negator, negative expressions, modal verbs, context, and sentence type.
