  • In recent years there has been a rapid growth of public con- cern over the degradation of both manmade and natural environments. Citizens protest development and redevelopment schemes, large power projects, lack of public access to beaches, and numerous other prob- lems concerning their environment. Intensified popular awareness about the importance of healthy and pleasant biophysical surroundings has led to political pressure for measures to restore, maintain, and im- prove environmental conditions. Action to improve the environment is being undertaken by government, industry, civic groups, and individ- uals.
