  • This book is an amended version of a thesis written at the Australian National University and presented for examination in 1982. Except for the inclusion of some material gathered during later trips to Flores, the volume is based on fieldwork carried out from 1977 to 1979 and in 1980. I can trace the inception of the research reported here and my interest in the anthropology of eastern Indonesian peoples to a seminar pre-sented by Dr. James J. Fox at Brown University, Providence, Rhode Island, USA, in the autumn of 1973. I wish to thank Professors Philip E. Leis and Robert R. Jay for enabling me to spend the spring of 1975 commuting from Providence to Harvard University in order to read eastern Indonesian ethnology with Dr. Fox.
