• Deviance and Control is quite different from its prede-cessor, Understanding Deviance and Control. The shortened title was cho-sen to convey a sharper, more balanced focus on deviance and its counter-part, control. The expanded content, including entirely new chapters on family violence and street crime, reflects both the growth of the field and the development of my own perspective on it. Family violence has become a major sociological subdiscipline in recent years, and the rapid accumula-tion of knowledge about it deserves treatment in any book on deviance and control. Scholarship in this area highlights some of the most stimulating questions that feminist theory has raised. Street crime and delinquency are serious problems, particularly for this country's urban poor. These deviant activities deserve consideration-especially in relation to deviance commit-ted by the powerful at the opposite end of the social hierarchy.
