There are two series of trends in higher education which we believe have created a need for this book. One is the increase in both the variety and sophistication of the instructional methods which are available to you, the college teacher who is our intended reader. The other group of trends is the simultaneous increase in the heterogeneity of the college student population, the increase in pressure for faculty productivity, and the effective decrease in institutional budgets. Although we feel that the resources created by the first series of trends provide partial relief of the problems created by the second, information on a variety of instructional techniques is generally not available in a form that is easily used. This book is our attempt to provide you with a personal reference containing information from research and experience on techniques ranging from lecture to computer applications. -
