<note>This thesis .is entitled "Transitivity in FHM.com Daily Jokes: a Text
Analysis". The objectives of this study are to find out the factors that create
humor in the punch lines of jokes and to find out the dominant process and
participant in the data and their roles in making the punch lines funny. The data
are taken from FHM on-line magazine. In this research, the present writer applied
the functional grammar theory; mainly the transitivity of clause as representation.
In order to get the objectives of this study, the present writer used some theories
related to language, jokes, and punch lines. The qualitative method is applied in this
thesis. The procedures of data collecting include seeking, selecting, reading and
identifying the data. Then, the data were categorized based on their transitivity factor
that creates the humor. The absence of circumstance, which is the main transitivity
factor that creates the humor in the punchlines, is what the analysis has found. Other
findings are that the dominant process in the data is the material process, the
dominant participant is the Goal, and the dominant circumstance is the cause.</note>
